# What is AI agent?

An AI agent in HR is software that takes a natural-language instruction and carries out a multi-step task autonomously, returning a completed result for human approval.

## AI agent explained

An agent differs from a chatbot in that it acts rather than answers. Given an instruction, it retrieves the relevant data, applies the applicable policy and rules, performs the steps, and produces an output — a drafted contract, a prepared payroll run, a ranked shortlist.

Well-designed HR agents keep a human approval gate on consequential actions. Releasing a WPS payroll filing or issuing a contract without sign-off is a governance failure, not automation.
